Royal Expressions Contemporary Ballet was founded in April 2009 and has three major components: Royal Expressions School of Dance, RE-OPEN (Royal Expressions Outreach Programs and Education Network), and the professional dance company itself.
The professional company—originally comprised of three members: Lacey Hales, Jelana Hall, and Princess Howell—began rehearsals on September 8, 2009 in preparation for the first production, Journey to Become, originally scheduled to premier on February 6, 2010. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, Hales and Hall both were unable to continue with the dance company. Howell was back at ground zero, but was determined to make the production happen. Her first order of business was to postpone the show until April 24, 2010 and she immediately began auditioning to reform the Royal Expressions Contemporary Ballet professional company. The company had a successful run of their premier production, with over 50 in attendance from Greensboro, Durham, Charlotte, Virginia, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and Delaware.
At this time, Royal Expressions Contemporary Ballet consisted of Princess Howell Johnson and four members: Michelle Driskell and Rachel Silver return from the first season and joining the company for the second season production, BLOOM, are Alex Aparicio and Emma Elliott.
